about

This song is a story about the Scot explorer - Alex Mackenzie - who was guided by First Nations to the ocean where he signed his name on a rock only 200 years ago. About seven generations ago. In the past 200 years the economy grew based on plunder of natural resources. We did not behave honorably with our hosts.

lyrics

Walking through this land
looking for the sea
A fur trade for the King
find some gold for the Queen

I saw some people there
in tents by a stream
A people strong and wise
but we were all just working
For the Queen.

They told me I would be
a good magistrate
Work for a mayor in a city
near Aberdeen

But I'd rather go exploring
in Canada
Than to sit around making excuses
for the Queen

We climbed up in the hills
looking out to the sea
To find us a brand new trading route
for a brand new industry

Together we walked the line
together we fell to the land
The law of the wilds
running our lives
In ways you can't understand

They told me I would be
a good magistrate
Work for a mayor in a city
Near Aberdeen
But I'd rather go exploring
In Canada
than to sit around making excuses
For the Queen

If the gifts of nature are called "natural resources" then I guess music is also a natural resource.
I have been living and loving and learning about all kinds of natural resources since I was a young boy here on the west coast of Canada. The strength of the land and the water that connects us all depends on how well we are able to "sing in this land"- and how well we can respect the whole. ... more
