about

This song is about globalization that has been happening without respect for real people and real places. In Canada the struggle by real people for real places intensifies as we slip further into what I call the Canadian National Doubt.

lyrics

The 'great PM' and the premiers
got set to drive this country aground
They took one quick look at the Constitution
and pushed a few pieces around

Well if you can't drive this car
then don't try to take it apart
Just find a way to lead the people
and speak straight from our heart

Because we're cutting all the forests down
and we're fishing all the oceans out
And the farms aren't for the people no more
you know Canada is Deep in Doubt

Some salesmen went to the USA
said man we can make you a deal
If you see something here you want for free
We'll put it up and make it a steal
Cause I'm sure that we can send it your way
Nobody here seems to care
Except maybe some people who live by the land
but we can keep them 'out of your hair'

Because we're cutting all the forests down
and we're fishing all the oceans out
And the farms aren't for the people no more
you know Canada is Deep in Doubt

Now one little boy from his history lesson
learned that the true north is strong and free
But free doesn't mean that we can give it away
take it from the family
Look to the people who lived here first
speak with open hearts
Ask where our future is on Indigenous lands
and how we can make a new start

Because we're cutting all the forests down
and we're fishing all the oceans out
And the farms aren't for the people no more
you know Canada is Deep in Doubt

about

Garth East Victoria, British Columbia

If the gifts of nature are called "natural resources" then I guess music is also a natural resource.
I have been living and loving and learning about all kinds of natural resources since I was a young boy here on the west coast of Canada. The strength of the land and the water that connects us all depends on how well we are able to "sing in this land"- and how well we can respect the whole. ... more
